Frequently Asked Questions

Asbestos

A. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate material with the three main types being Chrysotile (white), Amosite (brown) & Crocidolite (blue). Asbestos was applied in the manufacture of over 3,500 different building materials with certain types of asbestos containing material being produced up until as recently as 1999.

A. Asbestos is responsible for over 5000 deaths every year. Exposure to asbestos can cause four main diseases: Mesothelioma; Asbestos-related lung cancer; Asbestosis; and Diffuse pleural thickening.

A. It can be difficult to identify asbestos, as it is often mixed with other materials. Materials suspected to contain asbestos should be sampled by a competent person whether sampling a single material or accounting for all materials of a property/structure during a survey. Active can assist you with this.

A. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, requires that the duty holder (the owner of a non-domestic premises or a person or organisation that has clear responsibility for the maintenance or repair of non-domestic premises) must take reasonable steps to find out if there are materials containing asbestos in non-domestic premises, and if so, its amount, where it is and what condition it is in. Active can assist you with this.

A. The removal of higher risk asbestos-containing materials (sprayed asbestos coatings, asbestos insulation, asbestos lagging and most work involving asbestos insulating board) should only be carried out by a licensed contractor. There are some asbestos removal tasks, involving lower risk asbestos-containing materials that do not require a licence, however appropriate insurances and waste disposal are required. There are two categories of ‘non-licensed’ work, one of which, ‘notifiable non-licensed work’, has additional requirements for employers. Active can assist you with this.
